February 15 – National Flag Day
The flag of Canada is recognized worldwide. It was on February 15, 1965 at exactly 12 o'clock noon when the familiar red and white banner was first raised over Parliament Hill in Ottawa (our nation's capital) and the Maple Leaf has been proudly waving as the official flag of our country ever since.
Coincidentally, this year many provinces have a statutory holiday on February 15. Coincidentally because the provincial statutory holiday is celebrated on the third Monday of February. Different names are used for this holiday. In British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and New Brunswick the holiday is known as Family Day. In Nova Scotia it is Heritage Day and Prince Edward Island it is Islander Day. Named after a Metis leader Manitoba celebrates Louis Riel Day!

Practice Medicine in Alberta
Alberta has experienced a relatively high rate of growth in recent years, due in large part to its economy. Between 2003 and 2004, the province saw high birthrates (on par with some larger provinces such as British Columbia), relatively high immigration, and a high rate of interprovincial migration when compared to other provinces. Approximately 81% of the population live in urban areas and only about 19% live in rural areas. The total population is currently 4,600,000 or about 11% of Canada’s population.
Alberta is exceptionally beautiful. You will find fertile plains with abundant farms. To the west are the Rocky Mountains with their snowy peaks as host to Banff, Jasper and Lake Louise, one of over 600 freshwater lakes in the province.
A comparison of size puts Alberta at seven times the size of the UK. Those that move from the UK to Alberta are astonished at the open spaces. One gentleman remarked he pulls a long motorhome on vacation and he has no trouble navigating the roads or finding an overnight space to stay in one of many parks. Another remarked, it can get very cold in the winter, but the rest of the year is amazing.

The College of Family Physicians of Canada is the recognized licensing authority for family physicians in Canada. Those physicians coming from the UK, Ireland, Australia, or the USA will usually not have to write the examination required to practice as a General Practitioner in Canada. Verification of your MRCGP, MICGP, FRACGP, FACRRM, or DABFM will be required. If you are serious about practicing medicine in Canada the first thing you should do is open an account with PhysiciansApply.ca. It is an online portal operated under the auspices of the Medical Council of Canada (similar to the GMC in the UK). Every doctor coming to Canada must have an account. This is where your credentials must be verified. These credentials include your passport, medical degrees and more. Every province and territory of Canada has a regulatory authority to handle physician licensing and these authorities (Colleges) will need to access your PhysiciansApply.ca account before you can be licensed in Canada.
Don’t wait! Some documents can be verified quickly, and others may take some time, especially if you attended medical school in a country that is slow to respond to inquiries from Canada.
